Pertinax is a range of materials that provide sustained release of chlorhexidine. Our patented technology can be used as a component of biomaterials and medical devices, and it can also be incorporated into topical formulations such as aerosol sprays.
Pertinax materials are finely divided solids, and are stable for extended periods in dry form. When exposed to an aqueous environment, Pertinax releases chlorhexidine steadily, without the initial, front-loaded “burst” release that characterises many slow release materials.
The dose and duration of the chlorhexidine release can be selected, such that products incorporating Pertinax can be protected against infection for clinically useful periods. Because the release of chlorhexidine is steady and not front-loaded, this avoids two problems: high initial dose of antimicrobial which can cause adverse effects, and a dwindling supply of antimicrobial which is clinically ineffective and might drive resistance.
